Top Things To Do To Defend Yourself
This involves making sure that if criminals do target an individual, the risks to his safety or security would be minimized. It is about increasing one’s awareness of himself and of his surroundings. It is about being observant to the people, the area and the things around. When you are walking towards a destination, choose a path that is well lit and where lots of people go through. Avoid areas near bushes where someone who has ill intentions could hide before making an attack. And even though you feel the place is safe, it pays to be always alert. Continue to evaluate the movements of people – especially those you feel are not acting normal. Pre-program your cell phone for speed dial on police numbers. This makes it easier for you to place calls during emergency situations. It is to your advantage to be always ready for anything that may come up. The more ready you are, the lesser risk it will be for your safety. The theory of de-escalation comes into play here as well. De-escalation means doing what you can so that the situation will not get any worse. An example here is giving your money when somebody robs you. This prevents possible harm on yourself if you have otherwise fought for the money. Escape. The best self defense you could ever make is escaping from the hands of the criminals. Fighting back isn’t always to your benefit – even if you are confident of your fighting skills. It is always a risk to trade blows with a criminal – especially with an armed one. The last thing you would want to do, is to make the criminal more angry and provoking him to do more damage to you. Especially if you have doubts of your capability to really put up a fight and come out of it standing – then you are better off escaping rather than fighting. Self defense is more on using your smarts and not brute force. Being able to assess well a situation will increase your chances of coming out of it with less damage. In any situation, you would want to come out of it alive. Risking your life, for material possessions will be a poor decision on your part. You should consider your safety a first priority. Having the survival mindset. You should be able to visualize the most dangerous situation you can ever imagine – and run through what you are going to do. This enables you to somehow contain the fear that may overwhelm you in actual scenarios. This will also be a good way to mentally prepare yourself for the worst situation. When the actual attack or assault happens, you should be able to react by instinct and make survival your goal. You should be able to make do with the resources you have to deal with the attack. All your strength and mind should be put to full use when it will be a matter of life and death. Having the survival mindset is about not letting anyone hurt you. It is about recognizing your human rights and specifically your right to life. When criminals try to take this away from you, you should instinctively save yourself – whether it be by running away to safety or by fighting back to survive. Be confident in your stride. This is line with projecting yourself to be someone who is composed and confident. You should display yourself in public to be someone who is alert and capable to defend himself. This means you should not present a victim profile – one that is considered to be a weakling and an easy prey. If you give this impression in the outside world, you will be a target by many not well-meaning individuals. They like a willing victim – an easy prey. If you are someone however who may put up a good fight – and seen to be someone capable of defending himself. Those with bad intentions may just wait for another person to be their victim. Don’t be too overly confident however, that may just catch the attention of these bad elements of society. You may just provoke them and end up becoming their targets. Surprise your attacker. An element of surprise will give the attacker or criminal a dose of his own medicine. Acting to be submissive to their wishes, only to give that fatal blow when they least expect it will be enough to give you time to escape. How you surprise your attacker will be dependent on your imagination. Such deceptive counterattacks will do well in your arsenal of self defense. This self defense method requires your quick thinking and smarts. For preventing rape for example, you can urinate or vomit to repulse the assailant. Tell him you have AIDS or a sexually transmitted disease – just do anything you can think of that will ward him off. It is all about coming up with a strategy to give you that edge and unfair advantage over the criminal. Whatever you can come up with, as long as it will give you that opportunity to put off the attacker will be good enough. Trust your instincts.. When you feel you somebody is watching and following you – then you must go to a safer place with many people. This will prevent the criminal from doing what he wants – as an area with lots of people will not be a good place to do a crime. When somebody enters the elevator and you feel uncomfortable about the looks of things, get off at the next floor that you know there will be a good number of people. The soonest you can will be good enough. The important thing is to decide quickly and get yourself out of the situation the soonest. When you do get out of the elevator. You may want to report it to the security personnel. At least they will be able to check them out. These security personnel will be able to address such concerns professionally. Do not use stairways alone if you feel it is not safe. Go only if you have a companion or you can always ask the security personnel to help you out. Never risk yourself in situations where you will have lesser chances for escape and for asking help. Better be safe than sorry. In your homes, it is always better to be conscious of safety and security. Be sure to lock doors and windows so that intruders will not have an easy way in to do their evil plans. If these criminals will still pursue, at least you will have some time to react and call the police. Make use of a good security system for your home. This will be a good investment to protect your property and those living inside. Make use of motion sensors and the like around the house. Don’t Panic. If you are able to keep yourself calm, you can better protect yourself and defend yourself from attacks. You will be more creative in how to get out of the situation safely. You can strategize your way towards your escape and in resisting your attacker. Keep yourself in good shape. Whether your grand plan is to escape or to trade blows with your attacker, it is important that you are in tip-top shape. Without good physical conditioning, you have less chances of successfully defending yourself. Being in good shape and keeping yourself healthy will be a good way to be prepared physically for the demands of defending yourself against the bad elements around. Do some jogging, skipping rope or brisk walking for the less athletic types. Do some yoga or tai-chi. If you can, do some weight training as well to build some muscles. Some martial arts lessons will also keep you in good condition. For those who are less active, you may want to go for aikido. |
