Brief Background On Heli Skiing And Tours

Heli skiing is downhill skiing off remote trails accessed by a helicopter. Heli skiing is a challenging and exciting type of skiing, sometimes regarded as an extreme sport. Heli skiing allows skiers to descend from higher altitudes and ski through mountains of deep and untracked powder. For many skiers, the thrill of heli skiing comes from maneuvering through obstacles in the environment such as trees.

Who can try heli skiing? Heli skiing is not for beginners but rather for intermediate and advanced skiers or those who can confidently ski on all types of snow conditions and terrain. They should also have knowledge about avalanche safety. Moreover, fitness is very important in heli skiing so heli skiing experts and operators recommend starting a fitness program a couple of months before trying heli skiing. Additionally, skiers should go through acclimatization prior to heli skiing to prepare the body.

Heli skiing safety is a top priority of heli skiing operators with avalanches being their biggest concern. When choosing a heli skiing operator, make sure they have experienced and highly trained heli skiing guides and helicopter pilots who are competent in assessing the condition and stability of snow and any risks. Most heli skiing tours provide avalanche rescue transceivers and other rescue equipment and train their guests on how to use it. To dress suitably for heli skiing, layer on clothing under your ski suit and wear goggles, neck warmers and ski gloves. Simply put, you should wear clothing that is for sub-zero temperatures.

Usually, heli skiing tours are composed of a group of about six to a dozen skiers led by a professional guide. The number of people in a group varies depending on the heli skiing operator but most try to keep group of friends or skiers that are traveling together in one group. Optionally, your group may opt for private heli skiing charters for exclusive helicopter use. There are numerous heli skiing resorts especially in these countries and regions: Alaska, Canada, Finland, the Himalayas, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. You can also enjoy heli skiing in resorts in Turkey, Argentina, Austria, Chile, Italy, Georgia and Greenland

Snow and weather conditions will vary depending on when and where you will be heli skiing so you may want to check with your heli skiing operator about this. While it is impossible to guarantee environmental conditions, most heli skiing locations are in places where weather patterns are quite stable. Still, prepare yourself and expect varying kinds of conditions and terrain.
