Chapter 1: Meet The Game Of Table Tennis
The Object Of The Sport Table tennis is more commonly know as Ping Pong, a game of managing to keep a small ball bouncing from one side of a table to the next over a net using a small paddle. Sounds easy, doesn't it? It is not quite that simple, but with instruction you will master it. The basic objective of the sport is to win matches. Matches are made up of an odd number of games, of your choosing. To win a game you must be the first person to hit 11 points in the game. The person that wins the most games in the odd numbered selection (such as 3 out of 5) wins the entire match. Where Did The Game Come From? The game of table tennis has been around for some time. Although there are many theories on where it came from and how it came to be, there is a consensus on some information about this game's past. It is believed that in the 12th Century AD the game of table tennis was played. It is believed that it was derived from the game called "Royal Tennis" which was also known as "Real Tennis" or "Court Tennis." These games were commonly played by the wealthy, of course. By the 1880's there are some additional information and history that is important to note. Many historians believe that the game was known as "indoor tennis" and was most commonly played during this time by the British army officers that were stationed throughout the world including India and South Africa. They used the cigar box lid as their paddles and rounded out wine bottle corks for the tennis ball that was used. They strung out a net which was nothing more than a row of books. Also during this time, the game was earning more and more prestige in the upper classes of England's Royal Society. By 1890 the first official evidence of the game was found in a set that was made by David Foster who then patented it in England. Not only did it have a version of table tennis in this patent, but also a version of the games of lawn tennis, cricket and football (American soccer) also patented in table top games. Throughout this time and the time that followed table tennis became more and more popular. About the same time, Parker Brothers began marketing a similar game that included the portable net and a small ball and paddles. The game was officially underway. Instead of going through more of the history of this game, let's get into the importance of playing the game as we know it today. The rules and the structure of play are still quite the same as it used to be. Why You Should Play There are many reasons to enjoy this game including the fact that it is a lot of fun to play. Yet, you can go further in that you can find benefits in the way that it works to improve your physical abilities. Because you are doing a lot of physical moving, your heart rate will increase which makes this a great game for cardio workouts that you may need. Yes, table tennis is a game that serves as exercise. Yet, in that, it is still quite gentle to your body in that anyone can play within limitations. People of all ages can play the game and can enjoy it to the level that they want to. Many find that it is an ideal way to work out stress and to improve your agility. Still, the mental challenge of the game will also keep your mind sharp and alert. What's more, it is also an affordable game to play. You can play virtually anywhere with a few simply pieces of equipment, or the ability to make due with a few items that you may find. You can purchase the equipment that you need or you can find other products that can serve in place of it. What's important here is to be sure that you don't overspend on products that are costly. Once you get to the professional level (or on your way to it!) go ahead and splurge on these products. For now, a set of balls, a table and a set of paddles is all you will need. This is affordable and not necessarily hard to find either. In short, this is a game to enjoy by anyone and for any reason that you may have. If you have not given it a chance just yet, do so. You may find that playing with children is fun or with teens. But, adults from 20 well up to 90 can enjoy this game and all these benefits. |
