    Trailing Back The Past

Table tennis can be traced back in England. At that period, it was not yet considered a sport but a form of entertainment after feasting on dinner. The so- called amusement was fondly done by the elites in the society of the Victorian age. As what was mentioned earlier, the name already provides an idea that the game has roots stemming from tennis. In those years, the equipment employed to realize this featured activity were household items such as dining table. Books were piled up to form a net while the ball was the cork of a champagne bottle and the lid of a cigarette box as the bat.

From then on, the popularity of table tennis spread out which ushered manufacturers to release a line of appropriate equipment to the market. Bats in the past were typically of parchment extended upon a frame. Eventually, the sport was christened with a new name through the sound created when playing. It was there that the likes of “ping- pong” and “whiff- whaff” were conceived. As you browse over historic accounts of the sport, you will learn that a lot of sources noted that the game was introduced to Hamley’s of Regent Street by the moniker “Gossima.”

Eventhough “whiff- whaff” was employed, a lot of manufacturers settled for “ping- pong” when they released their line of equipment in the market. The moniker was widely utilized by J. Jacques & Son Ltd upon introducing its goods in 1901. Not for long, the said name was identified for expensive products of the sport. There were also other companies who stuck with table tennis. When the sport was brought to the United States, a similar situation happened especially that J. Jacques & Son Ltd was acquired by a corporation called the Parker Brothers.

However, the major change in the history of table tennis happened when an aficionado from England discovered balls created from celluloid. He is none other than James Gibb who learned about such when he traveled to the United States in 1901. After his sighting, he immediately believed that such equipment were perfect to be employed in playing the game. By 1903, E.C. Goode invented the modern- day bats by attaching a rubberized sheet that seemingly has pimples on top of a blade made from timber. By the twentieth century, this featured activity was prohibited in Russia because of the belief from individuals with authority that the vision can be badly affected.

During 1921, the Table Tennis Association (TTA) was established in England. Five years after, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was founded. By 1927, London was the chosen venue for the first ever official table tennis championship tournament in the world. In 1988, the sport was recognized in the Olympics. Backtrack a bit, during the fifties, bats employing a sheet of rubber integrated with a layer of sponge underneath was the reason why the game was virtually changed. It was there that important elements of speed and spin were introduced.

Speed and spin were first introduced in England through S.W. Hancock Ltd. This manufacturer released a bat that paved the way for the popularity of Johnny Leach. He employed the equipment from the company in the 1949 table tennis championship tournament. The utility of “velocity glue” boosted the two elements much further that ironically in a way, changed the tool to decelerate when playing the sport. All these are not only observed but intentionally performed up to this juncture. As a matter of fact, every individual who seriously wants to pursue the sport makes it a point to win a match with both factors.

By the latter part of 2000, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) established a lot of changes with the rules which were targeted to make table tennis attractive to a number of audiences. The organization worked on the sport to draw more spectators by implementing marketable strategies. Initially, the thirty- eight millimeter ball was replaced with the forty millimeter ball. The reason was because the air resistance contributed to the deceleration of the play. At that period, athletes started to boost the breadth of the bats by modifying the sponge layer. Because of which, the sport was extremely quick which became difficult to view over the television.

Another change implemented by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was changing the scoring system. In the past, twenty- one points were required but was modified to only eleven points so as not to drag playing table tennis nor even inflicting boredom to a lot of audiences. The decision of the organization was targeted to make the sport more exciting through quickness. ITTF also altered the rules when serving by prohibiting the athlete to hide the ball. The reason was to boost the standard duration of rallies while lessening the advantage of the individual who will do the service. The International Table Tennis Federation then worked to improve the general appeal.

Even with the changes implemented by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), there have also been plans to restore table tennis that existed even before bats made of sponge rubber were released in the market. Veteran athletes of the sport though rejected the move as they preferred the pimpled kind of paddles which contributed to the deceleration of defense complexity. Aside from which , “magnus” result of spin can also be eliminated. The reason was because the so- called killer shots were almost improbable to strike against an individual exceptionally playing the game but instead, was concentrated on the strategic aspect on how to artistically defeat an opponent.
